"Live Baltic Campus: Campus Areas as Labs for Participative Urban Design" is a Central Baltic Sea region project that the University of Latvia is implementing together with other universities of the Baltic Sea region, as well as institutions involved in urban planning and other stakeholders.

The aim of the project is to develop the basic principles and methodologies for successful involvement of the general public in urban planning processes, thus improving the quality, sustainability and competitiveness of the urban environment.

Within the scope of this project, the University of Latvia will design an action plan for further development of the Tornakalns Campus, taking into consideration the existing and potential development plans for the surrounding areas (transport flows, Rail Baltica, Northern Crossing). Another study will be done to investigate the best and most sustainable university-business cooperation models in order to ensure closer involvement of business and science in the study process.

  • An introduction meeting organized with our project partner Riga Planning Region on 10 May 2016, presenting the Live Baltic Campus project to stakeholders representing other ongoing urban development projects from Pardaugava area in Riga and state/municipality officials (read more)
  • A discussion organized with our project partner Riga Planning Region on 2 June 2016 about the role of campuses in knowledge urbanization and the creation of open, innovative urban environment (read more)
  • First Livable City Forum in Turku and Helsinki on 8-10 July 2016 (read more)

  • Study of the connectivity between Tornakalns Campus and the surrounding areas
  • Study of best models for closer cooperation with businesses and scientific institutions
  • Livable City Forum in Uppsala and Stockholm in November 2016
  • Livable City Forum in Tartu in spring 2017
  • Livable City Forum in Riga in summer 2017

The project is implemented at the University of Latvia from 1 October 2015, and will be finished on 31 December 2017.

Total forecasted projects costs at the University of Latvia are 199'750.00 EUR, 80% of which is funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
